What is NABERS?
NABERS (the National Australian Built Environment Rating System) is a national initiative managed by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.
It is a performance-based energy rating system for existing buildings. Buildings are given a rating (0 – 6 stars) based on their measured operational impact on the environment – allowing buildings to be compared with their peers.
The NABERS Energy rating also provides information about the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the operation of the building.
NABERS Energy helps owners and tenants reduce their energy usage, costs and greenhouse emissions. Furthermore – it is now a legal requirement to have a NABERS rating when selling or leasing some buildings.
The Commercial Building Disclosure scheme (CBD scheme) now requires a Building Energy Efficiency Certificate, including a NABERS Energy rating, to be disclosed when office space of more than 2,000m2 is offered for lease or sale.
NABERS Energy ratings disclosed under the CBD program must either be base building or whole building ratings.
